Mycotic Pneumonia in a Captive Pigeon Due to Aspergillus Fumigatus

چکیده
1185 Abstract The etiologic significance of Aspergillus fumigatus, a saprobic organism, has been described in a young pigeon which died due to severe respiratory distress. The fungus was easily demonstrated in the pneumonic lung both by cultural isolation as well as direct microscopy. The bird was kept in captivity and was given mouldy feed. Epidemiological investigation revealed the high concentration of Aspergillus fumigatus in the feed as well as inside the wooden cage. The treatment could not be attempted as the diagnosis was made on post-mortem examination. The growing role of Aspergillus fumigatus as an important opportunistic pathogen should be investigated particularly in the compromised host.

Leukemia is the most common malignancy in children which leads to immunosuppression and predisposes patients to opportunistic infections. We report a 12-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed simultaneous infection with pneumocystis Jirovecii pneumonia and aspergillosis in the induction phase of chemotherapy. The patient developed pulmonary cavitation and pneumothor...
متن کاملQuantification of IgG antibodies to Aspergillus fumigatus and pigeon antigens by ImmunoCAP technology: an alternative to the precipitation technique?
BACKGROUND We evaluated the ImmunoCAP technique for measurement of IgG specific to Aspergillus fumigatus and pigeon antigens. METHODS We used ImmunoCAP and precipitation technique to measure concentrations of IgG to A. fumigatus or pigeon antigens in sera from 265 patients and 42 controls. We also evaluated linearity, interference, imprecision, concordance, and diagnostic accuracy of the meas...
متن کاملGermination of Aspergillus fumigatus inside avian respiratory macrophages is associated with cytotoxicity
Although aspergillosis is one of the most common diseases in captive birds, the pathogenesis of avian aspergillosis is poorly known. We studied the role of avian respiratory macrophages as a first line of defense against avian aspergillosis. The phagocytic and killing capacities of avian respiratory macrophages were evaluated using pigeon respiratory macrophages that were inoculated with Asperg...
متن کاملOsteomyelitis and lung abscess due to Aspergillus fumigatus in a chronic granulomatous disease patient
Background and Purpose: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited disorder of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex. This disorder results in recurrent life-threatening bacterial and fungal infections. Aspergillus species are the most common fungal infections in these patients. Case Report: Herein, we present a case of fungal infection in a girl wi...
